This last week has been a mess with everything going on in the country, and I’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster emotionally. One thing I have relied on has been crafting, it is a good place to just turn off all the noise of what is going on outside and focus on what is in my hands and the book going on in my headphones. So here is a quick update on my progress!
I mentioned last month that I am officially in the weeds, and it is really starting to look like it. I usually like keeping the back of my work neat and tidy, but only eight colors in and the back looks like a mess. I’m hoping to cover some of it up as I add more colors, but there’s a good chance that won’t work out. This first section is turning into a bit of trial and error with how I’m going to create the map going forward.
One thing that is working so far is how I’m keeping track of which color I’m working on. Currently, what I’m doing is that once I find a symbol I plan to work on I will grab one of my colored pencils and I will trace the outline of the square with the symbol with that color. Once I have outlined all the boxes for that symbol I will fill them in as I go along and stitch each section. It takes a little more time, but I think its worth it for the long run. It helps me see where the color are and helps me plan out how I’m going to fill them in. It’s much better than trying to hunt and peck each color in a sea of similar-ish symbols.
I’ve finished “The Medieval Mind of C.S. Lewis” by Jason M. Baxter and I will definitely be listening to it again, maybe see if I can convince my family to listen to it with me. One of the last chapters in the book was how Lewis reconciled modern science and ancient philosophy. I particularly liked how he tackled the issue of metaphor in medieval manuscripts by stating that all writing or work that deals with things that are not physical are by nature metaphorical. The fact that we can give a different metaphor for something that takes place doesn’t change that we are still giving a metaphor. The model medieval writers were using attempted to combine science as they knew it with a metaphor that could try and convey the complexities of a higher plane of existence that we do not have a one to one example for. Like I said before if you are at all interested in C.S. Lewis then I would recommend the book! Now that I have finished this one I will be scrolling through my list of audiobooks waiting to be read and pick something new.
