crafting Mid month Middle Earth

Mid-Month Middle Earth

Some time ago I got a Counted Cross Stitch pattern for a large map of Middle Earth, and I am finally getting around to working on it.

This is a cross stitch project that I am very excited for, but also nervous about. To be completely honest this series is going to be as much to motivate me to not throw my hands up in despair over the months and years it takes me to finish. It’s amazing how motivating it can be to know other people are expecting a progress report, even if their only in your own head.

I’ve gotten the fabric for my project and measured it out (see picture). I had planned for the project to have a 1 ½ inch border but having evened the edges it’s now looking like I will have a little more than an inch, if that. It should still be enough once I finish the project so long as I put a good edge on it, but we’ll see how that goes once we get there. It’s going to be a long way off.

I washed the fabric to get some of the stiffness out of it and make it easier to handle. For large cross stitch projects I use masking tape to tape up the edge so that the edge doesn’t unravel as I work. getting the tape onto the piece was part of why I lost some of the border, the edges were more uneven than expected and I had to trim a good 1/2 inch off to make them sort of straight.

For the actual cross stitch I plan to start working my way around the border of the piece to make sure I’ve measured it out correctly. Usually I would start at the center and work my way out but this is so large I’m nervous that if my measurements are off I’m going to have a tough time undoing and re-doing what I’ve finished by that point. I still marked the middle and measured the way out to the edge of the project based on the center of the pattern but it’s going to be slow going.

Now that the fabrics been prepped it’s time to actually get to the stitching. I’ve gotten my thread but I’ll need to get it all sorted.

Until next month!
