Fandom Fun: Island Shawl

Growing up I played plenty of video games and one I remember fondly is “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker”. As I’ve been expanding my knitting repertoire I thought it would be cool to make something from a Zelda game, however all I could find pattern-wise were simple green tunics and caps. This wasn’t what I was looking for but no matter how much digging I did I wasn’t finding anything else. And as always, if you can’t find something then the next best thing is to make your own.

One of the first patterns I’ve made is a shawl based on an alternate outfit the protagonist has called the Outset Island tunic. It’s the first outfit the main character has before they get their cool green tunic and set off on their epic adventure. While relatively simple it’s still fun and I think it looks cool on it’s own.

To make the shawl I tried to keep it relatively simple. I used a zigzag pattern on the bottom of the shawl to replicate waves and free-handed a lobster pattern which filled in the center of the shawl. I think the shawl I finished works as far as a proof of concept goes, but it still needs some tweaking to work better.

One issue I’ve found is that the pattern I’ve made is too narrow. I think that it’s a decent length but it is barely wide enough to cover my back. I’ve dubbed the current patter as “child sized” because I think that it would fit a kid just fine but if I want to wear it I’ll need to double the initial cast on. I’m waiting to finish a few other projects before re-trying the shawl pattern (work my brain a bit). I’ll see if I can do a side by side with the new pattern once I have both completed. One good thing is that while I still need to work on the form of the shawl the pattern of zig zags and lobster is solid and can be used as needed for other projects. Maybe I’ll figure out how to make a full tunic out of it using a light weight yarn, but until then I’m happy to work on making a functioning shawl.
