Sock it to Me: The Heel Turns

May was one of the rare months where we got five weeks instead of four, so here’s a quick update on the socks I have been making: I have passed the heel!

I would be even further along, however I made a mess when first knitting the back of the heal. I am going to blame the mistake on it being late at night, as I figured out what I did wrong in the morning. Because the sock is being knit in the round the instructions said “knit 18 stitches, then turn the work and purl 36”. My brain, of course, said “you can’t purl 36 out of 18, those numbers don’t match”. When I re-read the instructions in the morning it seemed obvious that it meant I needed to purl the 18 stitches I knit, then continue back along the other needle for another 18. At the time I was reading it the night before, the most obvious thing seemed to be “oh, I’ll make 18 new stitches to make up the missing ones!” which I then proceeded to do, and work with right up until it came time to re-join the heal to the rest of the sock. At that point I found I had 18 stitches too many. This was when I went to bed and when I woke up the next morning my mistake smacked me in the face. I was less than happy to have to frog all the work I did the night before, but that’s what I get for knitting a new pattern late at night.

Thankfully the mistake has been corrected and I am now happily making my way from the heel down the rest of the foot. From here on I should just be knitting until I reach the length needed to start the toe decreases.

Who knows, maybe I’ll be sharing pictures of the finished first sock soon!
